One of the many martial arts that one can learn is Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This form allows one to defend themselves without putting too much emphasis on size or strength. If they use the correct technique and leverage they can easily defeat a bigger and stronger person. The martial art was derived from Kodokan judo a Japanese martial art during the early period of the 20th century. This martial art form concentrates on both chokeholds and joint-locks.
This martial art can be used in mixed martial arts competitions, sport grappling tournaments (both gi and non-gi) as well as for self defense. It has helped women defend themselves against stronger opponents.
The number of security guards and police officers who are learning this martial art is increasing. In the case of hand-to-hand combat training in martial arts like Brazilian jiu jitsu can increase one’s chances of succeeding.
The number of belts in this form of martial art is seven, starting from white belt and ending in the red belt.
White belt is the first belt that a practitioner of Brazilian jiu-jitsu is awarded. One does not have to fulfill any special prerequisites to get this belt.
Blue belt is the next level and only practitioners whose skill-set is well-rounded will get this belt. They must have knowledge of both basic offensive moves and power techniques. The minimum age for receiving this belt is 16 years. The minimum period needed for a person to get a blue belt is one year to one year and six months.
Purple belt is the next belt after the blue belt. Getting this belt means that the practitioner has entered the adult ranking system. To achieve this belt one will have to undergo dedicated training for around four years minimum. Those practitioners who have been awarded this belt have gained enough knowledge that they can now teach those below them. One has to be 16 years or above to get this belt. Another prerequisite to get this belt is that the practitioner should have held the blue belt for a minimum period of two year.
After the purple belt there is the brown belt. The practitioner who gets this belt is one belt closer to joining the practitioner who hold the elite black belt. While holding this belt the practitioner must start to refine their techniques rather than acquiring new techniques. The minimum age of the practitioner when they can receive this belt is 18 years. Holding the purple belt for a minimum period of one year and six months is a prerequisite for a practitioner to get the brown belt.
The next belt is the black belt. The practitioner must be a holder of the brown belt for a minimum period of one year and their age should be 19 years or higher.
Practitioners who have displayed that they have attained the highest level of knowledge both in the terms of technical and practical are awarded the black and red belt. Red belt is the highest and the hardest to get. Founders of this martial art are the only ones who are allowed to hold the highest rank among the red belt holders.
