When you have an old candle sitting around that’s been burned down or has lost its scent, why throw it away? You can easily keep reusing the same container by just removing the old wax. It only takes a little while and is something you can do while watching TV.
First grab a glass baking dish that is oven safe. Fill the glass container a little less than half way full with water. Next take your old candle containers and place them on the glass baking dish. Space the containers about an inch apart from one another so that when the water begins to boil the water won’t splash into the containers. Place the entire glass trey on your stove. Gas stoves work the most effectively. Turn the heat to a medium to a medium-low heat setting and allow the water to heat up. Be careful not to turn the burner on a high heat setting. You can potentially break the glass trey due to the direct heat if you expose it to extreme temperatures.
Pull out two paper bags and stuff one inside of the other. Place these on a hard surface that will not absorb wax. You can use this are a place to dump the hot wax after it has melted. Consider plaicng an old table cloth on whatever surface you use to protect it from the inevitable splashes of wax when you pour it out. If you would like to reuse the wax, consolidate the candle wax into one container. It’s a great way to make chunks or fun shapes to put in other candles later. Simply reheat later and add a dark color additive if any of the wax has been colored. Use cookie cutters when the wax is still pliable to create unique shapes to decorate your candles with later.
Once the wax melts in the containers, dump the contents into the paper bag. Use a chop stick or skewer to remove the excess wax from around the edges of the container. Finally take a paper towel to wipe down the surface and remove the final remnants of candle wax.
If the candle container is hot when removing it from the water, consider donating a pair of old oven mitts to the cause. You can pretty much guarantee that whatever you use will get waxy in the process so plan accordingly. Also be sure that you’re wearing something you don’t mind getting dirty. No matter how many candles I make and all my careful planning, I always seem to get wax on something!
Once the containers cool, they are ready for use the next time you make a candle! You’ve done two great things simultaneously; saved you your hard earned money and helped the planet by reusing what you already had! If you reuse the old wax you contribute even let waste and save more money. Otherwise you can simply toss the remaining wax and start another project.
