Kanha National Park is situated in the city of Kanha in the district of Mandla, Madhaya Pradesh. This popular wildlife sanctuary has the total area of 1,945 sq. km. and is 600-900 m above sea level. This beautiful park has been the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s classic Jungle book. The charm of this wildlife sanctuary has not been reduced as it is still as beautiful today. The major features of this region’s amazing topography is the horseshoe-like shape of valley and the whole park area is enclosed by the spurs of the Mekal.
The eastern and western halves of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, the forests of Banjar and the Halon Valley, respectively, has been always famous for their wide diversity of animals and wildlife. Steeps and rocky escrapments along the edges offer breath-taking views of the valley.
The Kanha National Park was built in 1955 together with a special law that states the preservation of wildlife. Since then this National Park dedicated itself in the preservation and saving of a variety of animal creatures. Due to that, many endangered species have indeed been saved here since then. Today this wildlife sanctuary is among the few most picturesque and physically attractive wild life reserves in Asia. Known as the “Tiger Country”, this National park is an ideal home for both the prey and predator.
So far Kanha National Park’s most attracting feature is its open grassy meadows, where you could spot the common animal species here such as, blackbuck, swamp deer, sambhar, and the chital. And, if anyone can go beyond into time, a barefooted Mowgli as it may be would come padding along the dusty trail, for this is the land of the famous book of Kipling.

Bird species that live here includes storks, teals, pin tails, egrets, peacocks, ring doves, pigeons, fowls, and many more.
The region’s climate is tropical. Summers are hot and humid while the winters are very pleasant. During the time of monsoon, Kanha National Park is closed due to heavy rains and some storms. This national park is closed from July to mid-October. Expect your time of visit in this wild life sanctuary during the season of summer and some other time not within the months of July to mid-October.
