Despite how simple the game looks, the first time you try bowling, you might not do very well as it’s a bit more difficult than it looks. The object of the game is relatively easy: you simply send a ball along the lane, aiming at the pins in an attempt to knock as many as you can over. You get two tries to knock all of the pins down. Anybody can bowl. The game is simple enough that most newer players instinctively know what they need to do the first time they try. However, it takes some time to master the techniques behind turning a good game into a great score.
When you go bowling, the type of ball you use is an important consideration. Most bowling alleys will have a supply of bowling balls on hand for people who do not bring their own. Spend a little time trying out some of the different balls available. See if you can find a ball that isn’t too light or too heavy for you to use. You want a ball with holes big enough that your fingers and thumb fit comfortably. The holes shouldn’t be either too tight or too lose, as you could reduce the control you have over the ball. Adding a little textured tape for the thumb hold can also help improve your grip. Be sure to lift and try each ball you are considering using to make sure that you get the ball that is right.
Make sure you have your own footwear. Sure most bowling alleys will rent shoes to you if you are just a casual bowler. If you plan on spending a lot of time at the bowling alley, though, it is a good idea to get your own bowling shoes. Having your own shoes will ensure that your feet are comfortable and that you have the right arch support during the game. If you’re distracted by shoes that are uncomfortable you won’t bowl well. You should also consider using a wire brush to prepare the toe and heel of each shoe. This will help to decrease your chance of sliding around while you are bowling.
A good way to make sure that your ball curves away from the gutter closest to your bowling arm is to twist your fingers slightly as you release the ball. When you do this you’re putting a ‘hook’ on your ball. The effect is to make the ball curve more toward the center of the pins. Be careful! Too much finger twisting will send your ball into the opposite gutter. Becoming an expert bowler involves much more than this, though. One way to look at it is to keep having fun. Or, never give up! You can prevent frustration from affecting your scores just by relaxing and going with the flow. Consistent practice and keeping a positive mental approach will always do wonders for your game.
