For a word processor and spreadsheet, you get Microsoft Office Starter, which contains limited editions of MS Word and MS Excel. So if the limited editions are OK with you, you can start using your notebook as soon as you get it set up. Or, if you need more complete applications, it isn’t hard to simply upgrade. If you do a great deal of typing, and are used to a regular sized keyboard, this one is actually not that small and will not inhibit your typing abilities. Similar to the maneuverability that you will find with a standard mouse, the touchpad that you access your icons and files with relative ease. A touchpad is simply a flat surface that acts as the mouse for the computer. Overall, the keyboard and touchpad are comfortable and user friendly for anything you want to do on the Vaio EC.
One area where the Sony Vaio EC Notebook is not very impressive is the battery life. Although it is not unusual for a computer of this size to have a short lifespan with the battery, this one does last about three hours on average. If this type of lifespan for the battery is not acceptable, you will have to choose a computer that is smaller in size. If there is an outlet nearby, and you have the standard AC adapter that comes with this unit, you will never have to worry about your battery going dead. Or you can purchase a battery extender. Of course, many people like notebook computers because they can be used without any wires, so you may still find the relatively short battery life a limitation. If you are looking for a good-sized portable computer, then the Vaio EC Notebook is definitely for you. Not everyone likes the design, and the battery life isn’t very impressive, but this is typical with notebooks of this size and capability. As a desktop replacement, you can’t do any better in this price range than the Sony Vaio EC Notebook.
