1.Use anti virus software and update regularly. Your computer is vulnerable to all viruses developed since your last update. Updating once a week is good, even better is to configure your software to check for new definition updates daily
2. Use computer patches. A patch is a quick repair for a computing problem - E.g.if you are having trouble with a game, the manufacturer may email you a downloadable patch. You download, install and the problem should be fixed.
2. Use a firewall - the firewall is a barrier between your computer and the internet. Firewalls are necessary even if you have a dial up connection, it takes only 20 minutes for a non - firewalled computer to be infected . The faster your connection the bigger your risk. Routers have inbuilt firewalls.
3. Be careful about opening email attachments. Never open an attachment when you don’t recognise the sender. Many worms and Trojans-laden spam mimic the sender’s name. Some attachments don’t even need a double click, they launch when you view the infected message in the preview pane
4. Be careful when using IM. IM worms hijack IM clients by using a users buddy list of contacts. The worm sends a message to the list such as ” hey check out this picture ” the link that is sent downloads the worm. Be very careful about opening a message that comes on its own with a link or an attachment. Check with whoever sent it before you click.
5.Be careful if you use P2P and distributed file sharing. P2P worms spread via peer to peer file sharing networks ( Kazaa, Grokster,Edonkey, Fast track etc) If you use P2P and file sharing your computer is vulnerable.
