Taser guns are an electroshock weapon that uses an electrical current to interrupt voluntary control of muscles referred to as neuromuscular incapacitation. The word taser is an acronym that stands for Thomas A swift’s Electric Rifle. It was developed in the late 1960′s by NASA researcher Jack Cover. This early model required gunpowder to fire and it was hence considered a fire arm.
The electronically powered taser gun model by brothers Rick and Tim Smith and with Jack came to being twenty years later. This was after the brothers experienced the shooting of two of their friends which resulted in their deaths and this inspired them to come up with a way of self-defense that was not deadly and would offer people an opportunity to defend themselves in a dangerous circumstance which are life threatening.
They developed the 34000 model taser gun which was an improvement from the one Jack Cover had developed earlier. It also had a safety feature known as anti-felon identification system. It worked by releasing numerous small pieces of paper with the serial number on them. This feature was incorporated in the gun so as to prevent people using it to commit criminal acts. The purchasing of the gun was also closely monitored with buyers having to undergo background checks to ascertain they had no criminal record.
Modern guns come with various options in terms of shape and color and some even have laser sights for more accurate aim. The mode of use of the gun has differing resultant effects.
Depending on how you use it, the resultant effect is different on the target. When used at a long range, the taser gun immobilizes the target whereas if used at close range it causes pain on the affected area. These types of guns can cause a stun of up to 50,000 volts.
These guns for law enforcement differ with those of civilians in that they have a longer range in terms of shooting distance. This is an important feature as it aids in easily subduing criminals who might be armed and dangerous without getting too close.
Taser guns are also under scrutiny by critics that they cause some deaths, but the issue is still open to debate as to whether the deaths were a direct result of use of the taser gun or some other underlying condition of the deceased. As the debate to whether or not they are safe and not lethal, still remains a vital form of safe defense for many people.
