The Indian auto giant Tata Motors hasn’t been able to achieve its previously set target of delivering its small car Nano to the first one lakh customers by year 2010. So far, the company has managed to deliver only 77,000 units of Nano in the country as many customers, who booked the car at the time of its launch in the Indian market, have decided against taking immediate deliveries.
After launching the car in March 2009, the company had selected 1.55 lakh customers for the delivery of the car in two phases. In the first phase, it had set a time line of delivering Tata Nano to first one lakh customers by year 2010. But now, even after starting deliveries to the second lot of buyers the company hasn’t been able to reach anywhere near to this mark.
Tata Motors had started selling Nano off-the-shelves in a number of South-Indian states after inaugurating a new Tata Nano manufacturing plant at Sanand in Gujarat. Earlier this week, the company had announced that Nano model is now available for direct sales at all of company’s 874 outlets spread across the Indian market.
As per a recent statement given by Tata Motors’ spokesman, “There could be several customers waiting for deliveries, but at their own choice. We had informed everyone that the car was ready. There may be some cancellations as well, but some have postponed taking deliveries.”
In December 2010, the company sold 5784 units of Nano in the Indian market, which was considerably high from it’s the sales of mere 509 units in November 2010. The newly fast-track finance scheme and an extended warranty of 4 years had proved a sales booster for the car during the month.
